Astronaut Reveals Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of outer space.
The group of women also comprised leaders in various fields.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
